Rationale

Most evidentiary rules are intended to assist the fact finder in the search for the truth. Thus the rules exclude evidence that is immaterial, has little probative value, or is likely to prejudice and confuse the fact finder. In contrast, evidentiary privileges promote public policies by excluding evidence that may advances the search for truth.
